A step-by-step guide to applying for a Nigerian passport — beginning, as it must, with your NIN.
From NIN to passport, in five steps.
You cannot apply for a Nigerian passport without a valid NIN. Start there, then follow the passport process below.
Step 1 — Obtain the NIN

Required documents for enrolment: valid proof of Nigerian citizenship, such as a birth certificate or a Nigerian passport (current or expired); your BVN, if registered; and one parent’s NIN for minors (under 16).
At enrolment you will visit with your documents, fill out the enrolment form, and have biometrics captured (fingerprints and facial photograph). You will receive a tracking slip with a unique number. Verification and issuance may take a few days to weeks; your NIN slip is received via email and must be kept safe.
Step 2 — Gather your passport documents
- NIN slip
- Two recent passport-sized photographs
- Birth certificate or age declaration
- Completed passport application form (from the Nigeria Immigration Service website)
- Proof of payment for the passport application fee (amount not stated here — see the NIS portal)
- Other supporting documents, if applicable: marriage certificate, police report for lost passports, affidavit of change of name
Step 3 — Apply online
Use the Nigeria Immigration Service portal: portal.immigration.gov.ng. Complete the online form accurately, upload scanned supporting documents, pay the passport fee online, print the payment confirmation receipt, and schedule an appointment for biometric capture and document verification at the nearest NIS office or embassy/consulate.
Step 4 — Visit the NIS office or embassy/consulate
Attend on your appointment date with originals and photocopies. Fingerprints, photograph, and signature will be captured, there may be a brief interview, and your documents will be submitted for final verification.
Step 5 — Collect your passport
You will be notified by SMS or email when your passport is ready. Collect it at the NIS office, embassy, or consulate, presenting your receipt and identification.

Check the NIS website or office for updates. The renewal and lost-passport process is similar, with extra documentation (old passport, or a police report). Ensure your NIN and documents are valid and up to date, to avoid delays.
